This character, pronounced ‘a’, is the first character in the Siddham script which is used to write Sanskrit. It is the beginning of life and of all things in the universe and is the mother of all sounds. The character points to Dainichi-nyorai, the Buddha who represents the whole universe. In Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, by understanding this character ‘a’, you will find the Buddha within.
