Gesshoji Temple is the resting place of the Lords of Matsue. The 7th lord, Matsudaira Harusato, who was named Fumai-ko, was called the greatest tea master of that time, and was a lifelong practitioner of Zen. The character ‘mai’, means ‘darkness’, ‘deception’ or ‘foolishness’. Fumai is the opposite, and is a state you reach through self-reflection.
